Coarse aggregate ('jelly') is the structural filler in concrete. 20 mm jelly is the standard for slabs and columns. 12 mm suits lintels and thin sections. 40 mm suits mass concrete and foundations. Stone dust and 6 mm chips go into flooring base courses. GSB is the granular base for roads and plinth filling.
20 mm jelly is the default for RCC (M20/M25 mixes). 12 mm suits densely reinforced sections where the bar spacing is tight. 40 mm goes into PCC and mass concrete work. Use GSB (granular sub-base) under plinths and driveways. Use stone dust for compaction and flooring bases. Use 6 mm chips for terracing and lean concrete.
