TMT (Thermo-Mechanically Treated) bars are the reinforcement in every RCC element. Prices move with steel market rates and differ by diameter — thinner bars (8 mm) cost more per tonne than thicker ones. In Bengaluru, dealers sell bars per tonne for bulk orders and per 12 m piece at retail.
The number is the minimum yield strength in MPa. The 'D' means more ductility (higher elongation). That is why Fe 500D is the default for homes in seismic zones. Fe 550/550D carries more load per bar, which suits high-rises and heavily loaded columns where you want fewer, thinner bars. For typical Bengaluru homes, Fe 500D in 8/10/12/16 mm covers slabs, beams and columns. Consult your structural engineer before you substitute grades.
Brand-official rates (Indus) and Tata Nexarc are per tonne or per 12 m piece, and include taxes. Dealer rates vary with payment terms and delivery distance. Where both exist, the site shows per-piece and per-tonne prices. A 12 m length of 8 mm bar weighs about 4.74 kg. Divide the piece price by the weight to get the per-kg rate.
